Nominal Impedance
Nominal impedance is a representative rated electrical load for a transducer, expressed in ohms.
Actual impedance can vary with frequency. The nominal value is separate from the minimum, DC resistance and the input impedance of active electronics.
Nominal Impedance — Super Tweeter
For a passive super tweeter, nominal impedance describes the rated load of the specified driver or assembly. Its crossover and connection arrangement affect the load presented to the amplifier.
Compare the intended filtered connection and main-speaker integration. A nominal rating is not a constant resistance at every frequency, and it does not identify the required crossover frequency or power handling.
Nominal Impedance — Headphone
For headphones, nominal impedance is one part of matching the transducer to an amplifier. Sensitivity also determines how much electrical drive is needed for a given acoustic output.
Compare impedance with the amplifier’s supported load and relevant power rating. A higher or lower nominal value alone does not establish loudness or sound quality, and it should not be read as the headphone’s minimum impedance.
Nominal Impedance — Subwoofer
For a passive subwoofer or specified driver, nominal impedance describes the load to be driven by an amplifier. An active subwoofer’s line input is a different electrical interface.
Compare the actual driver or wiring arrangement and the amplifier’s load requirements. Keep line-input impedance and voice-coil DC resistance separate. The nominal value does not describe every point of the impedance curve.
Nominal Impedance — Loudspeaker
For a passive loudspeaker, nominal impedance provides a rated load description for amplifier matching. In a hybrid model with powered bass, it describes the passively driven section connected to the external amplifier.
Compare the nominal rating with any stated minimum and the amplifier’s load requirements. A nominal value does not guarantee that the impedance never falls below it. Input impedance of a fully active speaker’s electronics is a separate specification.
