Nominal Analog Line Level

Nominal Line Level is the reference operating level used for an equalizer’s analogue inputs and outputs.

Common references are −10 dBV and +4 dBu. They use different voltage references, so their numbers cannot be compared by simple subtraction. Nominal level is not the largest signal the unit can accept or deliver; maximum input and output levels describe those limits.

Match the operating-level setting to the connected source and destination where the equipment provides a choice. A mismatch can leave the signal too low or use up headroom earlier than expected, even when the connectors fit. Check both ends of the path rather than assuming every RCA or XLR connection uses one fixed level.

This setting is separate from an EQ band’s boost/cut range, an input trim or a volume control. Compare the stated reference standard and any switchable modes, then use the actual maximum-level and noise specifications to assess the available operating margin.
