Glossary term

Operating Wavelength

Operating wavelength identifies the optical wavelength used by a transceiver, usually stated in nanometres.

Wavelength describes the light signal rather than the network data rate. Transmitting and receiving wavelengths may be the same or different, depending on the link design.

Operating Wavelength — SFP Ethernet Cable

In an SFP Ethernet link, the transmitter, receiving module and fibre must form a compatible optical combination. Bidirectional single-fibre systems can use complementary transmit and receive wavelengths at the two ends.

Compare the transmit and receive requirements of both modules rather than assuming identical labels always form a pair. Also check fibre mode and the supported network standard or rate. A wavelength match alone does not establish the full link budget, connector compatibility or maximum supported distance.
