Operation Mode

The degree of automatic record-playback operation provided by the turntable.

Operation mode concerns actions such as starting play, lowering or returning the arm and stopping at the end. A manual cueing lever makes arm handling easier without making the deck automatic.

Operation Mode — Turntable

For a Turntable, manual operation leaves playback actions to the user. Semi-automatic operation adds an end-of-record action, while full automatic operation can start a record and return the arm. A changer additionally handles a stack of records.

Read the actual actions provided, because an automatic lift, stop and return are different functions. A deck that lifts the stylus at the end may not return the arm to its rest. An optional aftermarket accessory should not redefine the standard deck’s operation mode.

Compare convenience with your listening habits. Automatic operation does not establish cartridge quality or speed performance, and manual operation is not inherently better sounding. The distinction is which actions the deck performs.
