Glossary term

Maximum DSD Output

The highest DSD rate explicitly available from a digital output, with its connection and transmission mode.

DSD output is different from DSD file support or conversion inside the product. Native DSD and DoP are transmission modes; the receiving component must support the mode and rate actually sent.

Maximum DSD Output — CD Transport

For a CD Transport, DSD output can describe conversion of CD audio into a DSD stream for a compatible external DAC. It does not mean the original CD contains DSD data.

Read the rate with the named output and any stated native or DoP mode. A DSD capability belonging only to an internal converter does not establish a DSD stream at a digital socket. If no rate is given, retain that uncertainty.

Compare the specific output with the DAC’s accepted formats. A higher converted DSD rate does not create information absent from the CD, and support on one connector should not be copied to every digital output.

Maximum DSD Output — SACD Transport

For an SACD Transport, maximum DSD output identifies the stream available through a specified digital connection. Native SACD playback inside the player does not by itself establish external DSD delivery.

Read the rate and mode for the named output. HDMI, I²S and proprietary links can have different requirements, while a coaxial or optical output must explicitly support the stated DSD stream. Analogue playback is a separate path.

Compare the complete transport-and-DAC connection, including any compatibility restrictions. A general DSD logo or supported input rate is insufficient. A higher available rate may describe upconversion rather than the original disc’s recorded format.
