Peak-Hold Metering

Peak-Hold Metering indicates whether a level meter retains a recent peak reading long enough to be seen.

Brief signal peaks can be difficult to follow on a constantly changing display. Holding the peak marker makes those events easier to notice, separately from the meter’s current-level indication.

Peak-Hold Metering — Tape Deck

The display can help when setting recording level, but its reference and scale must be understood. Tape formulation, recording settings and signal content affect the suitable level; a retained peak is not automatically proof of overload or a target to reach.

Check how long the marker remains and whether it resets automatically or manually. Peak hold does not turn the deck into a limiter or stop distortion. It reports the signal at the meter’s measurement point, which may differ from the level of a recording being played back from tape.
