Glossary term

Player Format

The player’s physical product format, such as a full-size component, compact unit or portable player.

Format describes size and packaging rather than audio performance. A component supplied without speakers differs from a complete system that includes them, even when both can play the same discs.

Player Format — SACD Transport

For an SACD Transport, format describes the physical component and package, not which SACD areas or output formats it supports. Full-size and compact units may both need separate conversion or amplification equipment.

Check the stated width, intended use and included items. A universal disc player is still sized as a component, while a package supplied with speakers represents a different product arrangement. Optional speaker bundles should not be assumed to be standard.

Compare the dimensions with your rack and the required downstream equipment. Format does not establish stereo versus multichannel playback, native DSD output or better sound; those require their own specifications.

Player Format — CD Transport

For a CD Transport, format helps establish where the player fits and what equipment accompanies it. A full-size or compact component normally joins an existing system, while a portable player is designed to be carried.

Read the dimensions and supplied package. A photograph with matching speakers does not mean the speakers are included. A CD receiver can still be a separate component if loudspeakers must be added.

Compare shelf space, portability and the rest of your system before looking at individual features. A smaller enclosure does not establish fewer supported formats or inferior sound, and width alone does not describe ventilation or cable clearance.
