Power Supply Location
Where the product obtains its operating power, including internal, external, battery and USB-powered arrangements.
Supply location describes the physical power arrangement, not circuit quality. A required external supply differs from an optional upgrade, and a rechargeable battery differs from continuous USB bus power.
Power Supply Location — Music Server
On a Music Server, the power arrangement determines whether a separate adapter or chassis is needed alongside the server. An optional external upgrade may replace the normal internal supply or supplied adapter.
Read the supplied configuration and any required extras. A DC input normally needs a compatible external source, while descriptions such as linear or regulated do not themselves identify where the supply sits.
Compare the complete package, placement and power connections. An external supply does not establish better library performance or sound, and a USB storage port does not mean that the server takes its operating power from USB.
Power Supply Location — DAC
On a DAC, supply location distinguishes a mains-powered unit from one using an adapter, an internal battery or power drawn from the connected source. This matters particularly when choosing a DAC for a phone or laptop.
A battery charged over USB is still a battery arrangement. A USB bus-powered DAC can also offer an optional supply socket without making an external supply mandatory. Read how the intended operating mode is powered.
Compare the source’s power capability and any required adapter with the DAC’s instructions. A USB audio connection alone does not establish bus power, and supply location does not independently rank conversion quality.
Power Supply Location — External Clock
On an External Clock, the power arrangement determines whether the unit can connect directly to mains or needs another supply. Some clocks require a separate adapter even when it is not included.
Read whether an external supply is mandatory or an upgrade to an existing internal arrangement. A DC input and a reference-clock input serve different purposes, and a description such as regulated supply does not establish its location.
Compare the complete operating package and specified voltage, polarity and connector. A separate supply box does not by itself establish clock accuracy, stability or phase noise, and it does not replace any stated warm-up requirement.
Power Supply Location — Streamer
On a Streamer, power may come from an internal supply, external adapter, battery or the host device’s USB port. These arrangements affect placement and whether another mains socket is needed.
A USB power input fed by a wall adapter is an external supply arrangement, rather than power drawn from a host device. A dongle taking its operating power from the connected host is USB bus powered, even if optional power is available.
Compare the intended setup with the supplied accessories and power requirements. Neither a USB connector nor a networking feature establishes the power arrangement, and an external supply alone does not prove improved playback quality.
Power Supply Location — SACD Transport
On an SACD Transport, supply location describes the power arrangement for the complete player. A required separate power chassis is part of the operating system, rather than simply an optional accessory.
Read whether the model uses an internal supply, external adapter, battery or optional upgrade. A portable battery model may also accept an adapter. Descriptions of separate internal supplies for audio and drive circuits do not establish an external enclosure.
Compare the complete installation, including connecting leads and space for every required box. The arrangement does not establish SACD output compatibility or better sound; those depend on the transport’s interfaces and overall implementation.
Power Supply Location — CD Transport
On a CD Transport, supply location identifies whether power hardware is inside the player or in a separate adapter or chassis. A portable transport may instead operate from its own batteries.
A battery-operated player remains a battery design even if it can also use a mains adapter. Read whether any separate supply is included or is an optional upgrade. Multiple internal supply sections do not imply multiple external boxes.
Compare the complete package with available space, sockets and portability needs. Supply location does not establish the drive mechanism, reading accuracy or output format, and a power-supply description without a location should not be interpreted as one.
Power Supply Location — Preamp
On a Preamp, supply location describes whether the power hardware shares the main enclosure or occupies a separate adapter or chassis. A multi-box preamp with a required power unit has an external supply arrangement.
Read whether a separate unit is included, necessary or optional. Battery operation refers to powering the preamp itself, not its remote control or a small battery that preserves settings. A regulated-supply description alone does not establish location.
Compare the complete installation and required connections with your available space. External placement is a construction choice, not proof of lower noise or better sound, and an optional upgrade should not be mistaken for a missing essential component.
Power Supply Location — Turntable
On a Turntable, this entry concerns the motor’s power supply or speed controller. It may sit within the plinth, in a required external box or adapter, or in an optional upgrade unit.
Read the arrangement needed for the deck to operate. A separately housed speed controller supplied as part of the system is external; an optional controller can be an upgrade to the deck’s normal supply or adapter.
Compare the complete motor-power package with your placement and speed-control needs. A built-in phono stage’s supply is a different concern. External location alone does not establish speed accuracy, electronic speed selection or better sound; those require separate specifications.
