Regulation

Power-Supply Regulation indicates whether the output is actively controlled to remain near its intended voltage.

A regulated supply responds to changes in load or input conditions within its operating limits. This differs from an unregulated output whose voltage can vary more directly with those conditions. The feature is separate from the particular circuit topology used to provide the power.

Regulation — Power Supply

Check the specified output voltage and the conditions under which it is maintained. A yes/no regulation entry does not state the allowable deviation, transient response or available current. When a load exceeds the supply’s limits, regulation may no longer hold or protection may intervene.

Regulation is not the same as low output noise, and it does not guarantee compatibility with every device requiring the nominal voltage. Polarity, connector wiring and current capacity remain necessary checks. Compare quantitative regulation figures under similar conditions where available rather than assuming that every regulated supply behaves identically.
