Record Hold-Down

The supplied or built-in method used to hold a record against the turntable platter.

Hold-down methods can include a weight, clamp, outer ring or vacuum system. They use different mechanisms, and the presence of an optional accessory does not mean it belongs to the supplied configuration.

Record Hold-Down — Turntable

For a Turntable, record hold-down describes how the disc is secured during playback. A weight relies on its mass, a clamp grips or tightens around the spindle, and a vacuum arrangement draws the record towards the platter surface.

Check the specified method and included hardware. A screw clamp, collet or reflex clamp, and peripheral ring require different fittings and handling. A standard spindle alone does not establish any of these systems, and multiple methods may be provided together.

Follow the deck’s intended setup. An accessory for another turntable may not suit its spindle or bearing. Hold-down type does not guarantee that every warped record becomes flat or playback improves.
