Reel Deck Format

Reel deck format identifies the kind of open-reel machine: a home deck, studio machine or portable field recorder.

The category describes the product's role and construction rather than its track layout or sound quality. Battery-powered field machines remain portable recorders even when used professionally. Tape width, track format and supported speeds are separate compatibility specifications.

Reel Deck Format — Reel-to-Reel

A home deck normally connects to a separate hi-fi system, while a self-contained recorder includes amplification and speakers. Studio or broadcast machines are designed for those working environments. A portable field recorder prioritises operation away from mains power; a small monitor speaker does not necessarily change that role.

Compare the machine and use rather than judging from its location or connectors. Balanced sockets alone do not make a deck a studio model, and a studio machine remains one in a home system. A playback-only deck is still a machine; reels, tape and accessories are not reel decks.
