Tape Types
Reel-to-reel tape types identify the formulations for which a machine provides recording bias, equalization settings or a stated calibration.
Different tape formulations need appropriate recording conditions. A tape selector or stored calibration describes the machine's preparation for a tape type, rather than every reel that can physically fit on it.
Tape Types — Reel-to-Reel
Standard, low-noise/high-output, extra-efficiency and studio high-output tapes can require different settings. Selecting the appropriate position helps match bias and equalization to the formulation being recorded. A calibration for a particular studio tape is more specific than simply describing the machine as suitable for professional use.
Compare the supported positions or calibrations with the tape and recording speed. An EE position for slower-speed recording is not a universal setting for all high-output tape. A reel supplied in the box does not by itself establish a matching calibration. Playback equalization standards and reel dimensions are separate specifications from these recording tape-type settings.
