Reference Fluxivity
Reference fluxivity is the magnetic level aligned to a tape machine’s reference meter indication, in nanowebers per metre.
It links a magnetic level on tape with a meter indication such as 0 VU. A different operating alignment changes what that indication represents. The reference is an operating point, separate from the tape's maximum or peak recording capability.
Reference Fluxivity — Reel-to-Reel
Knowing the machine's reference fluxivity helps interpret its recording meters and match operating levels across equipment. A deck aligned to a higher reference records more flux at the same reference indication. The margin above that point still depends on the tape and recording conditions.
Compare the machine's alignment or selectable levels. A calibration tape's labelled fluxivity does not alone establish the deck's operating setting. Likewise, maximum output level or a flux value at a distortion threshold is not the reference. A higher alignment is not automatically better: noise and overload margin must be considered together.
