Glossary term

Server Type

The product’s main role as a music server, dedicated music-storage device, or CD-ripping device.

Device type describes the job a product performs. It does not rank its sound quality or specify every feature it contains.

Server Type — Music Server

A Music Server maintains a music library and runs software that makes it available for playback. It may also have audio outputs or a built-in CD ripper; those additions do not change its central server role.

A dedicated music-storage product provides a network home for the library and may run server software. A dedicated CD ripper primarily copies discs to another storage destination. Check whether a product retains and serves the library itself when these descriptions overlap.

Compare the device’s role with the equipment you already have. A network player that only receives music is not automatically a server, and an upgrade module is not necessarily a complete standalone device.
