Shelf Depth

Shelf Depth is the usable front-to-back distance available to support equipment on a rack shelf.

This differs from the rack’s overall depth, which may include posts, trim or other structure. The support area must accommodate the component’s feet as specified by its manufacturer; the chassis dimensions alone do not show where those contact points lie.

Allow separately for rear connectors, cable bends and the ventilation clearance needed behind the component. A shelf deep enough for the chassis may still leave cables pressed against a wall or rear panel. Front controls and handles may also project beyond the quoted chassis depth.

Check whether braces or posts reduce usable depth at particular positions. Do not assume an overhanging component is safely supported just because most of its case rests over the shelf. Compare the actual foot positions, shelf boundaries and any stated mounting restrictions; usable depth is a fit dimension, not a substitute for the shelf’s load rating.
