Shelf Thickness

Shelf Thickness is the vertical thickness of a rack’s shelf panel, stated in millimetres or inches.

It describes the panel itself, not the gap above it or the height of the rack. A thick-looking edge may include trim or a layered construction, so check what the quoted measurement covers rather than estimating thickness from appearance.

Shelf Thickness — Rack

Thickness contributes to the shelf’s structural behaviour together with its material, width, unsupported span and mounting. Two panels of equal thickness can have different load ratings. A thicker panel is therefore not enough on its own to establish safe support for a heavy component.

When planning shelf spacing, account for panel thickness as well as the clear opening and the equipment’s required ventilation space. Check the rating of the shelf assembly and any limits on where feet may bear on it. Thickness is a dimensional specification, not a direct measure of vibration isolation, durability or the rack’s total load capacity.
