Shelf Width
Shelf Width is the usable side-to-side distance available for equipment on a rack shelf.
The usable surface or opening can be narrower than the rack’s outside width because columns, rails or trim occupy space. Check whether the figure describes the full shelf panel, the clear opening between supports or the area where equipment can actually rest.
Shelf Width — Rack
Compare the width with the component’s case, feet and any side controls or ventilation requirements. Two devices fitting side by side does not establish that their combined weight is permitted or that they have enough cooling space. Access for placing and removing them also matters.
Where supports project into the shelf area, check the width along the full depth occupied by the equipment. Do not infer usable width from a photograph or from overall rack dimensions. The width specifies available space; shelf load capacity and the equipment’s mounting instructions determine whether a proposed arrangement is suitably supported.
