Form Factor

Form factor describes how a loudspeaker is designed to stand or mount, rather than its sound quality or channel role.

Floorstanding speakers have cabinets that stand on the floor. Standmount or bookshelf speakers are compact cabinets for a stand, shelf or other raised surface. Desktop speakers are intended to sit on a desk. Adding a floor stand to a bookshelf speaker does not turn it into a floorstanding design.

Form Factor — Loudspeaker

Start with the space available, allowing for the cabinet and any stand. A bookshelf label does not guarantee that a particular shelf is a good position: check the manufacturer’s clearance and placement advice. Position affects the sound you hear. Centre describes a channel role, and studio monitor describes a use; neither replaces the physical form factor. Compare performance separately instead of assuming a larger cabinet sounds better.
