Speaker Output Taps
Speaker output taps are connections on an amplifier’s output transformer for different nominal speaker loads, such as 4, 8 or 16 ohms.
These labels describe the intended speaker load, not the amplifier’s own output impedance: its opposition to current at the output. They are not wattage ratings. A minimum permitted speaker load is a separate operating limit, not a list of taps.
Speaker Output Taps — Power Amp
For power amplification, use the maker’s instructions to match the tap to your speaker’s nominal impedance and the amplifier’s operating mode. Nominal impedance is a label: a speaker’s actual impedance changes with frequency.
Correct matching helps the amplifier deliver its intended power. A higher-numbered tap does not guarantee more watts. Stereo and mono operation may require different connections and loads; check the model’s manual rather than treating the tap list as wiring instructions.
