Starting Torque

The turning force available to accelerate a turntable platter from rest.

Starting torque concerns the motor and platter drive. It is not the stylus tracking force, and it does not directly describe speed accuracy once the record is playing.

Starting Torque — Turntable

For a Turntable, starting torque helps describe how strongly the drive brings the platter into motion. Its practical effect depends on platter inertia and the drive arrangement, so torque alone does not determine startup time.

Read the value with its unit and operating condition. Manufacturers may use newton-metres or kilogram-force centimetres; the numbers cannot be compared directly without converting units. An adjustable drive may specify several settings or a range.

Compare torque alongside startup behaviour and the intended use. A performer may value how the platter responds after being slowed by hand, while a home listener may rarely stop it between tracks. Higher torque is not, by itself, evidence of quieter operation, lower speed variation or better sound.
