Subwoofer Output

The number of dedicated subwoofer outputs with bass management: routing and filtering for bass playback.

This counts connections, not speaker power. Several sockets may carry the same mono signal rather than independent bass channels. A subwoofer output is also different from LFE, the separate low-frequency-effects channel in surround recordings. It can carry bass from ordinary music too.

Subwoofer Output — Preamp

A preamp sends a low-level audio signal to a powered subwoofer or a separate subwoofer amplifier. The subwoofer output does not power a passive subwoofer directly.

A low-pass filter reduces higher frequencies in the subwoofer feed. A separate high-pass filter reduces bass sent to the main speakers. Having a subwoofer socket does not guarantee that main-speaker filtering is available.

Check the connector type, whether the output follows listening volume, and the available filter settings. These can depend on the operating mode; a bypass mode may leave filtering and volume control to another device.
