Subcode Functions
Subcode functions use information recorded alongside digital tape audio to identify programmes, mark positions and assist navigation.
Start, skip and end identifiers serve different purposes. Programme numbers, absolute time and a table of contents can provide further organisation. These features describe recorded navigation information, rather than the audio encoding or the transport's mechanical counter.

Start IDs locate programme beginnings, while skip IDs identify material to pass over and an end ID marks the end of recorded material. Programme numbering can support direct selection and renumbering. Absolute time provides a recorded position reference, and a table of contents can organise track information.
Compare the specific functions and whether the machine writes, reads or edits them. A displayed remaining time or ordinary tape counter does not establish recorded subcode support. Absolute time is also distinct from SMPTE or IEC timecode used for synchronization. More navigation functions do not indicate better audio recording performance.
