Surge / Transient Protection Rating

Surge-protection rating here is the peak transient current the protection circuit is rated to divert.

It is stated in amperes or kiloamperes with specified surge conditions. Peak surge current is separate from energy in joules and from normal continuous load current.

Surge / Transient Protection Rating — Power Filter

For a power filter, this rating describes the surge-protection circuit’s short-duration capability. It does not indicate how much current the filter can continuously supply to amplifiers and other connected components.

Compare the same waveform, duration and event-count basis, including whether the rating applies to one path or the complete unit. A larger peak-current number alone does not specify clamping voltage or guarantee protection against every event. Keep continuous outlet capacity and noise-filtering performance as separate specifications.
