Turns Ratio

The ratio of primary to secondary winding turns, indicating the transformer’s nominal voltage step-up.

A ratio of 1:10 means ten secondary turns for each primary turn. In an ideal transformer, this multiplies voltage by ten; real loading affects the result.

Turns Ratio — Step-Up Transformer (SUT)

For a Phono Step-Up Transformer, turns ratio helps match a low-output moving-coil cartridge to the following MM phono stage. A higher ratio provides more voltage step-up, but also changes the load presented to the cartridge.

If several taps or factory versions are offered, read each ratio with its own cartridge recommendations and reflected impedance. A 1:20 option should not be treated as an additional setting on a unit sold only with a fixed 1:10 ratio.

Compare the cartridge’s output and loading needs with the MM stage’s sensitivity and overload margin. Choosing the largest ratio can produce excessive level or unsuitable loading; the ratio is a matching parameter rather than a performance ranking.
