System Memory (RAM)

System Memory is the working RAM installed in a music server, commonly stated in gigabytes. It is separate from the storage holding the music library.

RAM holds data and instructions being used by the running software. More capacity allows more working data, but does not by itself make audio playback better.

System Memory (RAM) — Music Server

Check memory requirements for the server software, library size and processing functions you intend to use. A configuration adequate for simple playback may have different limits when handling a larger library or additional services. Compare the actual supported configuration.

Where several memory sizes are offered, identify which version the figure describes. If some RAM is reserved for playback, distinguish that allocation from total installed memory; do not add it again.

An SSD cache and music-storage capacity are not RAM. Nor does a memory figure establish that users can upgrade it or that the server loads whole tracks into RAM; those are separate functions to verify.
