Record Equalization

Record equalization identifies the standardized response curves a reel-to-reel machine uses when making a recording.

NAB and IEC/CCIR are different tape equalization systems. The recording curve and speed determine the playback settings needed later; a machine’s playback options need not match all of its recording options.

Record Equalization — Reel-to-Reel

The curve matters when recording tapes for playback on another machine. A recording made with one equalization system should be replayed with the corresponding curve at the correct speed. Options can include NAB, IEC/CCIR, AES at 30 ips or a specifically identified alternative curve.

Compare recording specifications separately from playback compatibility. A machine with switchable NAB and IEC playback may still record with only one fixed curve. Bias adjustment, level calibration and noise reduction do not select the same characteristic. Keep the curve with its stated speed; a playback-only machine does not acquire recording capability by offering several equalization choices.
