Tape Head Configuration

Tape head configuration describes how a cassette deck arranges its erase, recording and playback functions among its heads.

A two-head recorder combines recording and playback in one head, alongside an erase head. A three-head design separates recording and playback elements, either in one combination housing or in physically separate heads. A player may have only a playback head.

Tape Head Configuration — Cassette Deck

Separate record and playback elements can support monitoring the freshly recorded tape while recording, rather than merely listening to the source. A combination three-head assembly provides these separate functions within one housing. The physical housing count therefore need not equal the number of head functions stated.

Compare the arrangement, keeping an unspecified three-head design separate from one described as discrete. For auto-reverse decks, consider the arrangement in one direction; for twin-well decks, this field describes the recording well. Head material is another specification, and a three-head label alone does not guarantee better recording performance.
