Tape Head Input (Unbalanced)
Unbalanced tape head inputs accept the low-level signal directly from a tape machine’s playback head, counted as stereo connections.
A left and right RCA socket together form one stereo input. The tape preamp amplifies this signal and applies the required tape equalization before sending line-level audio onward.
Tape Head Input (Unbalanced) — Tape Preamp
The count shows how many stereo head connections the preamp provides. One input serves one stereo head feed, even though it uses two sockets. It requires access to the machine’s playback-head signal; the normal line output has already passed through the machine’s playback electronics.
Compare the wiring, head compatibility, loading and supported equalization, not only the connector shape. An XLR socket can be wired unbalanced. RCA and balanced versions offered as alternatives do not necessarily coexist on one unit. A line-level tape input or a phono input is not a substitute for a dedicated tape-head input.
