Tape Head Material
Tape head material identifies the stated magnetic materials used in a machine's recording and playback heads.
Materials such as permalloy, ferrite, Sendust and amorphous alloys have different properties, but the finished head's design and condition also matter. Material names do not establish a performance ranking or describe the number of head functions.
Tape Head Material — Cassette Deck
This field concerns the cassette deck's recording and playback heads, which may use the same or different materials. A combination design may also contain more than one stated material. On a twin-well deck, the relevant assembly is in the recording well rather than a separate playback-only well.
Compare the actual stated material and head condition alongside the deck's measured performance. A ferrite erase head does not establish ferrite recording or playback heads. A coating or a claim such as 'long life' is not a material identification, and a proprietary name should not be assumed to reveal an undisclosed alloy.
Tape Head Material — Reel-to-Reel
An open-reel machine can use different materials in its recording and playback heads. The material contributes to the head's magnetic and wear characteristics, but tape contact, gap geometry, alignment and accumulated wear also affect reproduction. A brand name may identify a proprietary alloy without disclosing its composition.
Compare stated recording and playback materials without adding the erase head's material to the list. A maker's name, coating or durability claim is not equivalent to identifying the magnetic material. Material alone cannot establish remaining head life or make a worn head comparable with a correctly aligned head in good condition.
