Tape Modes
Tape modes identify the named recording or playback operating modes supported by a digital tape machine.
Standard, long-play and high-sampling modes can trade recording time against sampling or coding arrangements. Some machines also support a four-channel mode. Mode names describe a complete operating arrangement, rather than a sample-rate figure by itself.
Tape Modes — Digital Tape Recorder
DAT standard play uses linear PCM, while long play uses a different coding arrangement and slower tape movement to extend recording time. High-sampling operation uses faster tape movement for its higher rates. These modes affect both tape duration and compatibility with another machine.
Compare the named modes and whether each is available for recording, playback or both. A machine that plays a mode need not record it. A listed sampling frequency alone does not establish a mode, and copy-management settings are unrelated. Do not apply DAT mode assumptions to another digital tape format without the machine's stated support.
