Tape Type Selection

Tape type selection describes how a cassette deck chooses the operating settings appropriate to the tape formulation.

A deck may detect the shell's type-identification holes, require a manual setting, or allow a manual override. A fixed normal-tape design offers no type choice. Supported tape types and the selection method are separate properties.

Tape Type Selection — Cassette Deck

The selection establishes the relevant bias and equalization settings for the cassette. Automatic systems read the shell's identification features; manual systems rely on the user's choice. An override lets the user depart from the detected type when the deck provides that option.

Compare the selection method separately from the list of tape formulations supported. Accepting several types does not prove automatic detection. A separate playback-EQ selector can provide another choice without changing how tape type is selected, while fine bias calibration adjusts recording behaviour rather than identifying the tape. Match the setting to the actual tape and recording requirements.
