Tape Type Support

Tape Type Support identifies the cassette tape formulations a deck is designed to play or record.

Common categories are Type I normal or ferric, Type II high-position or chrome, and Type IV metal. Some decks also support Type III ferrichrome. The type determines relevant operating settings; it is different from a tape brand or a noise-reduction system.

Tape Type Support — Tape Deck

Check recording and playback support separately. A deck may play a type that it cannot record correctly. Selection may be automatic or manual, and the required record bias and equalization must suit the tape and the deck’s supported arrangement.

Do not infer recording compatibility from the cassette fitting the compartment. Fine bias or EQ calibration is also separate from selecting the basic tape type. Keep any playback-only restriction with the listed type when comparing decks or choosing a cassette for recording.
