Height Adjustment Range

Height adjustment range is the vertical travel available at a tonearm’s pillar, usually in millimetres. It is not the arm’s absolute height above its mounting surface.

For example, 0–6 mm and ±3 mm both give 6 mm of travel. The latter runs from −3 to +3 mm around a reference position. Keep the maker’s endpoints and zero reference; “up to 6 mm” alone does not establish both endpoints.

Raising or lowering the arm changes the cartridge’s vertical alignment. The travel is not a cartridge angle in degrees, even when labelled VTA (vertical tracking angle). Nor does it describe the adjustment mechanism or the distance moved per dial step.

For a separate arm or one fitted to a turntable, check the maker’s instructions for your cartridge, headshell, record/mat and mounting arrangement. The available travel does not specify a universal ideal height or angle.
