Tonearm Mount Standard

The fitting used to secure a tonearm’s base to a turntable or armboard.

The base mount is separate from the cartridge fitting and headshell connector. A named standard, pillar diameter or custom armboard requirement describes how the arm is physically installed.

Tonearm Mount Standard — Turntable

On a Turntable, the accepted tonearm mount helps establish which arm bases can fit its armboard or mounting position. It matters when choosing an arm for an armless deck or considering a replacement.

Read the stated fitting and any specific armboard requirement. A list of available arm lengths or the name of a pictured arm does not establish a mounting standard. A custom armboard may need to be made for the chosen arm.

Compare the base fitting with the arm’s required mounting distance and available clearance. Matching a hole or collar alone does not guarantee correct geometry, height adjustment or room for the arm’s full movement.

Tonearm Mount Standard — Tonearm

On a Tonearm, the mount standard describes the base that must fit the turntable’s armboard. It can identify a named pattern, a specified round pillar or a requirement for a custom mounting arrangement.

Use the manufacturer’s mounting information for the exact arm. A screw size, arm length or pivot-to-spindle distance is not itself the base standard, and similarly named cartridge fittings describe another connection.

Compare the base with the available armboard and installation dimensions. A physically fitting base still needs the correct mounting position and sufficient height and movement clearance. An adapter should be assessed as part of that complete arrangement rather than assumed to solve every fit issue.
