Optical (TOSLINK) Input

Optical TOSLINK input count states how many optical digital audio connections receive a signal.

An optical input can use a full-size TOSLINK or specified mini-TOSLINK fitting. The count does not establish accepted audio formats or maximum sample rate.

Optical (TOSLINK) Input — Upscaler

On an upscaler, an optical input feeds the incoming digital signal into the selected processing path. The output can then use a different supported interface or rate.

Compare optical input limits with the source; the upscaler’s highest output rate does not describe its optical input ceiling. A plain S/PDIF label does not establish an optical connection unless the connector or medium is identified.

Optical (TOSLINK) Input — Headphone Amp

On a headphone amplifier with digital conversion, an optical input accepts a compatible digital source for the internal DAC and amplifier path. It is separate from the analogue line input.

Compare the supported optical formats and rates with the source and select a compatible source-output mode. An optical socket count does not establish multichannel decoding or headphone power. Check whether the fitting is full-size or mini-TOSLINK when selecting the cable.

Optical (TOSLINK) Input — DAC

On a DAC, an optical input receives digital audio for conversion to an analogue signal. The optical link carries the audio as light through a compatible cable.

Compare the source’s output format and rate with the DAC’s optical-input limits. A television or other source may need an appropriate output-format setting. A mini-TOSLINK socket can resemble a 3.5 mm analogue jack, so confirm its actual function.
