Winding Wire Material

The conductor used for the transformer’s primary and secondary windings.

Windings are the coils that transfer a signal through the transformer’s magnetic field. Their conductor is separate from internal hookup wire, connector plating and supplied cables.

Winding Wire Material — Step-Up Transformer (SUT)

In a Phono Step-Up Transformer, winding material is one construction detail of the signal transformer. Copper, silver and silver-plated copper describe different conductors, but the material alone does not specify the turns ratio, loading or complete electrical performance.

Read the description for the actual windings. High-purity copper remains copper, while silver-plated copper is not solid silver. Litz describes a wire construction rather than a separate conductor material. If primary and secondary windings use different conductors, retain that distinction.

Compare winding material alongside the cartridge-matching information and measured specifications. A more expensive conductor does not by itself establish better sound. Plated terminals or silver internal connecting wire should not be taken as evidence that the transformer’s coils use silver.
