Transmit Optical Power

Transmit optical power is the light power emitted by an optical transmitter under specified operating conditions.

It is commonly stated in dBm, referenced to one milliwatt. A range can describe the permitted output rather than a user-selectable power control.

Transmit Optical Power — SFP Ethernet Cable

For an SFP Ethernet link, transmitter power is one part of matching the optical signal to the receiving module. Losses through the fibre and connections reduce the power that actually reaches the receiver.

Compare output at the stated wavelength and operating conditions with the receiver’s permitted input range. A higher transmit figure does not automatically make a link more suitable, especially over short runs. Keep measured output, guaranteed limits and nominal values distinct, and do not confuse optical power with electrical supply consumption or data rate.
