Volume Control

Volume Control tells you whether a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has its own output-level adjustment. Yes means it does; no means it does not.

The control may work in analog or digital circuitry, even when operated by a physical knob. Its presence alone says nothing about sound quality.

Volume Control — DAC

When fixed and variable output modes are offered, variable mode lets the DAC set the listening volume of a connected amplifier. Fixed mode bypasses that adjustment, so volume must be controlled elsewhere, such as at an integrated amplifier or separate preamp.

Check which outputs the control affects. A working headphone volume knob does not prove that it adjusts the line outputs feeding your amplifier. Before connecting directly to a power amplifier, confirm in the manufacturers’ guidance that the DAC’s output level and the amplifier’s input requirements are compatible.
