Volume Control Type
Volume control type identifies the technology that changes audio level.
Potentiometers vary resistance; stepped switches and relay ladders select fixed networks. Transformer, autoformer and optical controls use other analogue arrangements. Digital attenuation changes the digital signal, while an electronically controlled analogue circuit still handles analogue audio.
Volume Control Type — DAC
For a DAC, volume may be changed before conversion, in an analogue output stage, or through both. A digital control interface does not identify where attenuation happens.
Compare the stated attenuation method and the output it controls. A rotary encoder, remote control or number of volume steps does not establish the technology; a fixed-output DAC may have no volume control.
Volume Control Type — Headphone Amp
For a headphone amplifier, the control adjusts listening level within the signal path. A motorized potentiometer adds remote operation to an analogue resistive control.
Compare the actual attenuation method and available level range separately. A knob’s appearance does not distinguish a potentiometer from an encoder, and channel matching at low volume is a separate performance characteristic.
Volume Control Type — Preamp
For a preamplifier, attenuation is a central function and can use passive networks, electronically controlled analogue circuits or digital processing. Some products offer more than one method.
Distinguish digital-domain attenuation from digital control of an analogue circuit. Remote operation, step count and brand names do not establish the underlying method, and multiple available methods should remain identifiable.
