It provides a network connection rather than a direct promise of any particular music service, streaming format or playback resolution.

A portable player can use Wi-Fi for supported online playback, downloads or software updates without a wired network connection. Which of these functions is available depends on the player’s software; locally stored music can be a separate listening option.
Compare supported network bands and connection requirements when these are specified, especially if the player must join an existing home network. Wi-Fi support does not imply Bluetooth headphone transmission, and an internet connection may still be required for online services. A missing specification leaves support unknown rather than confirming that the player lacks Wi-Fi.
