External Clock Input
External clock input support means a device can use a compatible external timing reference.
The reference may be word clock or another specified signal such as 10 MHz. The feature confirms support for external timing, not universal compatibility with all clock types.
External Clock Input — USB Reclocker
On a USB reclocker, an external reference can be selected to govern supported clocking operation. The audio signal still uses the device’s audio input; the external clock connection supplies timing rather than music data.
Compare the required reference type, accepted frequencies and electrical conditions with the proposed clock source. A word-clock input and a 10 MHz reference input are not interchangeable merely because both use BNC. Keep this support flag separate from the number of input sockets and from measured jitter performance.
External Clock Input — Upscaler
On an upscaler, external-clock support allows the unit to participate in a compatible clocking arrangement rather than relying only on its internal reference. The supported mode determines how that timing relates to the processed output.
Compare signal type, rates and termination requirements before connecting a clock. A digital-audio input that recovers timing from its incoming audio is not by itself a dedicated external-clock input. Confirm the selected internal or external clock mode; the feature alone does not establish an improvement in output performance.
