Capability

Tonearm

A tonearm holds the cartridge and guides it as the stylus follows the record groove. Its wiring carries the cartridge’s electrical signal towards the phono stage.

The same function appears in standalone arms and arms supplied with turntables. An armless deck, separate headshell or tonearm cable does not provide it. The cartridge generates the signal; phono amplification is a separate function.

For physical fit, check the arm’s mounting standard and required mounting distance against the turntable, then the cartridge mount against the arm. Check the supported cartridge weight and whether the arm can apply the cartridge’s recommended tracking force.

Effective mass must also suit cartridge compliance: the flexibility of its stylus suspension. Being able to balance a cartridge does not establish this match. Weight capacity and suspension matching answer different questions.

Use the arm and cartridge instructions for setup; the specifications below explain each measurement.
