Moving-coil step-up transformation
Moving-coil step-up transformation raises the small voltage from a low-output moving-coil (MC) cartridge for a moving-magnet (MM) phono input.
A standalone step-up transformer (SUT) is the product that provides this function. Its transformer is passive and needs no external power. It does not replace the phono stage: that still adds gain and applies RIAA equalisation, the tonal correction needed for record playback. The SUT alone cannot feed a line input. The catalogue labels “RCA Line Input” and “RCA Line Output” refer here to sockets carrying phono-level signals.
Turns ratio describes the approximate voltage multiplication. A higher ratio also lowers the reflected load: the impedance the cartridge sees through the transformer, for the same secondary load at its output.
Match the cartridge's output voltage and impedance requirements with the transformer and the MM stage's input load and signal-level requirements. More voltage gain is not automatically a better match. Recommended cartridge impedance and secondary load impedance describe different sides of the transformer.
