Speakers

Loudspeakers turn an electrical audio signal into sound. Choosing a pair means considering the amplifier, connections and the space where you will listen.

Passive or powered

Passive speakers need an external power amplifier; powered speakers have amplification built in. Check the model’s actual inputs before choosing your source or volume control.

Matching the amplifier

For passive speakers, watt ratings alone are not enough. Check nominal impedance, the stated load rating, and minimum impedance, its lowest value, against the loads your amplifier supports. Sensitivity describes sound level at a stated input and distance. Compare figures on the same basis; sensitivity is not maximum loudness.

Fitting your room

Allow space for the speakers and listening position, following the manufacturer’s placement guidance as a starting point. Room reflections change the sound at your seat, so positioning affects bass as well as the stereo image. Compare frequency response and bass extension with their stated level tolerance or drop and measurement conditions, not just the lowest frequency number.
