Turntable

A turntable rotates a record while the tonearm and cartridge trace its groove to produce an audio signal.

It begins the record-playback chain. Check whether the package includes a tonearm and cartridge or needs them separately. A cartridge’s small signal usually needs a compatible phono stage before the system’s line-level input; a turntable with a built-in phono stage may provide that step itself.

Compare supported record speeds and how they are selected. Belt, direct and idler drive describe motor-to-platter arrangements, while speed stability describes performance. For wow and flutter figures, compare the measurement method and conditions rather than just the smallest number.

Mechanical setup matters alongside the specifications. The cartridge mount, arm compatibility and tracking-force requirements need to fit the chosen parts. Follow their instructions for alignment and balance, and provide a stable, level support. A built-in phono stage or wireless output does not remove those setup needs.
