Turntable
A turntable plays vinyl records by rotating the disc beneath a cartridge carried by a tonearm.
The deck, arm and cartridge form the mechanical playback system. Some turntables arrive with an arm and cartridge fitted; others let you choose these separately. A bare motor unit may also need a plinth before it becomes a complete deck.
The cartridge signal normally needs phono amplification and equalisation before reaching a line-level amplifier input. A built-in phono stage can provide this, while a deck without one needs a suitable external stage or amplifier phono input. Check the output path rather than assuming every socket supplies the same signal.
Compare the supplied package, supported record speeds, operation mode and practical setup needs. Manual and automatic designs differ in which playback actions they perform. Drive type, platter construction and tonearm options describe design choices, while speed accuracy and wow and flutter describe measured behaviour. No single weight, material or drive label establishes the quality of the complete turntable.
