Music Server
A music server stores a digital music collection, manages its library and makes that music available for playback.
It sits at the source end of the system. A network player can receive music from it, while a server with suitable audio outputs may also play directly into a DAC or amplifier. Storage and library management are the defining functions; a streamer that merely reads a USB drive is not necessarily a full music server.
Check the supplied server software, supported players and where the library is stored. Internal drive capacity, external-storage support and room for expansion describe different limits. A built-in CD ripper can import discs, but it should not be assumed to be included.
For a growing collection, compare browsing tools, file support and backup options. Redundant drives can help with a drive failure, but do not replace a separate backup against deletion or other loss.
