Phono preamps

A phono preamp boosts the tiny signal from a turntable’s cartridge and restores the recording’s bass-to-treble balance.

You may already have this stage inside your turntable or amplifier. If it supports your cartridge, you do not need a separate box. A standalone phono preamp lets you add the function where it is missing or choose different cartridge settings.

What to check

  • Cartridge match. Check the exact cartridge type, output level and recommended load against the preamp’s gain and loading options. MM means moving magnet; MC means moving coil. High-output MC cartridges can need different settings from low-output MC cartridges—follow the manuals, not the label alone.
  • Output connection. Connect the preamp’s output to a line input, such as AUX, not another PHONO input. If the turntable has a switchable built-in stage, bypass it when using the separate stage.
  • Optional features. Choose headphone output, digital output or a subsonic filter only if your setup needs them. Check the particular model: these facilities are not included in every phono preamp.
