Preamplifiers

A preamplifier selects your music source and controls listening volume. It sends a line-level signal to a separate power amplifier or active speakers.

It cannot drive passive speakers on its own: the power amplifier supplies that power. Active speakers already contain amplification, so models with suitable line inputs can connect directly to the preamp.

What to check

  • Sources. Count the inputs you need and match their types to your equipment. A digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), streaming and a phono stage are optional, not standard features. If your turntable has no phono stage and the preamp offers only line inputs, add a suitable external phono stage between them.
  • Outputs. Check that the preamp’s output connection matches your power amplifier or active speakers. Use a volume-controlled preamp output for listening-level control; a fixed record output does not follow the volume knob.
  • Everyday use. Decide whether you need remote control, a headphone output or tone controls. Check the particular model’s features before choosing.
