Tonearm Height Adjustment

Tonearm height adjustment changes the height of the arm base relative to the record surface.

It helps accommodate cartridges of different body heights and changes the arm’s vertical geometry, including vertical tracking angle. The available adjustment method and range determine how the arm can be positioned.

Compare the usable height range with the cartridge, headshell and turntable arrangement. Some mechanisms require loosening and securing the arm base, while others provide a dedicated adjustment control. Do not assume adjustment is intended during playback unless explicitly supported. Height adjustment is separate from tracking force, overhang and azimuth; changing one setting can require checking the others. A nominally level arm is a setup reference rather than proof of a universally correct cartridge angle.
